Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to record the students’ viewpoints of the Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.T.) as far as the foundation and operation of a Sports Office in their institute is concerned; it also aims to determine the expedient characteristics of the Office under establishment, concerning the facilities structure as well as the organization and function of the campus recreation programs. 304 D.U.T. students (in Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupoli) voluntarily participated in the research. The questionnaire of the present research featured three parts. The first part included questions concerning the students’ demographics, their relation to sports as well as some others concerning the Sports Office operation in their institute. The second part featured two scales concerning the reasons for the students’ abstention or occasional participation in campus recreation programs. The third part featured a scale concerning the sport facilities structure as well as the content of the recreation programs the students wanted. The frequencies analysis revealed that 87.8% of the students consider the performance of campus recreation programs in their institute very important. After the merging of the first two questionnaires and the factor analysis that followed, two other factors were revealed, which interpreted the 61.5% of the total variation. The factor analysis of third questionnaire revealed other two factors, which interpreted the 57% of the total variation. The factor analysis of the third questionnaire revealed two more factors, which interpreted the 57% of the total variation. In addition, the research maintained that the sports facilities and the recreation programs should address both to students who prefer competitive sport and to those who prefer free time sport activities.
